EPISODE REVIEWS

Jerry Seinfeld / David Bowie
October 2, 1999

Hi, I'm Max Athorn. I'm a huge SNL fan, and have been for quite a while, but I've never done anything like this before. This should be the first of many SNL reviews for me, so keep your eyes open for more.

[PRE-EPISODE THOUGHTS]
Great! Jerry Seinfeld is hilarious! I hope SNL capitalizes on some of the great moments in news of the summer. I am expecting a very funny episode, because Jerry Seinfeld is naturally funny, and he should be working off of the energy of all of the SNL players. Well, we'll see.

[OPENING] Perot seeks ideal Reform candidate:
This sketch was ok, but Cheri's Ross Perot was dead-on and hilarious. Having Oteri portray an idiot like Perot is a good idea, because she's the only one who can be cutting and sarcastic enough to pull it off and make it fresh and funny! I thought Perot jokes were old news, but suddenly, after this sketch, they're fresh and funny. Man, that guy is stupid. Also, being a Minnesotan myself, I'm proud to see my governor shout out the opening line. Will's Ventura was very funny too. However, the writing was mediocre, so I will give that sketch a B+.

[MONOLOGUE] Jerry Seinfeld:
Not bad, but I expected better. I think they would have done better to just record one of the opening stand-up sequences from the T.V. series. Still, Seinfeld brought plenty of energy into the studio, and he kept me smiling. Not too bad. B-

[COMMERCIAL] www.clownpenis.fart:
Hilarious! This is so true! Eventually we will run out of web addresses and Insurance companies will resort to these types of names! SCARY! Well, I was cracking up. A!

[SKETCH] Morning Latte:
What can I say, these guys are hilarious. Cheri and Will are two of the funniest people alive, and they light up the stage. Jerry was very funny; "what, did you guys win this show in a contest?.." That was great. Again, the writing was mediocre, but the fabulous acting and constant chemistry between Cheri and Will made the sketch work. B+/A-

[SKETCH] Mary Katherine Gallagher goes for Jewish boy:
I have to admit, I'm not crazy about "Mary Katherine Gallagher." What's so funny about her? The movie should be good, but I don't know how much I like her. I think the concept is getting a bit old. Still, it was cute. Will's part in the beginning; where the introduce the Jewish basketball players; was the best. B-

[COMMERCIAL] Javis Home Security System:
PERFECT! That was SO funny! I know they are going to end up replaying that over and over, but they shouldn't overdo it. It would only suck the fun out of it. That was awesome. A+

[SKETCH] Action 8 News Watch:
I guess that was funny. I don't know, it got a little bit old. Cute, at best. C+

[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Colin Quinn:
Well, Colin was funny as usual. The best joke was either the one about how NASA people are "Real rocket scientists" or the Clinton's public breastfeeding law. However, the Point/Counterpoint was fabulous. I laughed so hard my pants fell down! I'll say it once, and I'm sure I'll say it again: Jimmy Fallon is unbelievable. I mean, this guy is so good and impersonations that it's scary. Seeing him right next to Seinfeld made it all the more noticeable of how talented he truly is. "Jerry, you Actual update: B Fallon/Seinfeld: A+. Overall: A

[MUSICAL GUEST] David Bowie:
I have to admit something else. I wouldn't be too upset if SNL eliminated the musical guest all together. It's nice to hear music, but usually, if I'm watching a tape, I fast forward through it! Still, David Bowie rules. A-

[SKETCH] Oz:
What was that? Some of the "Seinfeld" references were pretty funny; but not very many people will get that. I don't know, that was a waste of time. C-

[SKETCH] 1-800-EAT SH**:
From the worst sketch of the night to the BEST! This was HILARIOUS! Will Farrell is the funniest man! Really, that sketch worked at so many different levels. It was so simple, and yet I couldn't stop laughing! A+

[SKETCH] ... and a Pizza Place:
Eh, ok. Obviously a filler. I guess it was a cute idea, but really now. C

[MUSICAL GUEST] David Bowie:
I love this song! A

[SKETCH] He's alive ... he's dead ... he's alive:
The second best sketch of the night. It, again, proved that Will Farrell is unbelievable. EVERYONE was laughing! First you saw Seinfeld trying to hold it in. Then Horatio was about to burst. And then, towards the end, you saw Fallon start to lose it too! That was great! A

[OVERALL]
That was a very good start to the season. I guess parts of it could have been better, but overall it was quite good. I am looking forward to this season. The old cast is back, and I am very curious to here from newcomer Rachel Dratch. I would have liked to see Jerry Seinfeld used a little bit better, but it's ok. Very good start. A
