James Van Der Beek / Everlast
January 16, 1999

As much as I dislike James Van Der Beek, I have to admire him taking on live comedy. Although I think SNL could've found someone else [better] to host, hey, whatever. This was [overall], a pretty good episode. There were some original skits with some great points.

OPENING

Not too bad. I loved when Ana asked, "What are you doing with this whore-monger?" and Daryl was like, "Who are you talking to?" Better than most of their politcal opening.

- 8/10

MONOLOGUE

Funny stuff! I like how James was able to poke fun at himself.

-7/10

SPELLING BEE

Loved it! Will Ferrell is really great at the whole host-of-whatever thing. James did a great lisp, but I thought that his character was a little clichèd.

- 8/10

BABY COMMERCIAL

Teenie Beenie was it? I don't really remember. . anyways. I thought this was okay, the premise was good, but I thought that it could've been better.

- 6.5/10

BOY BAND SKIT

The whole boy band thing was hilarious. I loved Ana's braces! The songs sucked (as do most boy band songs), but it was funny how they spoofed the whole 98 degrees/BSB/'N Sync/Five stuff.

-8/10

CATS HOME MOVIE

Fantastic! I loved when James was all psyched and he would do the cat hiss. Chris Parnell was funny, and Ana was really funny as her whole "F*CK YOU" stage-manager thing. Daryl was terrific as the little infomericial host (or whatever.)

- 10/10

DOG SHOW

I have a feeling this will become one of the regular skits. It's still in developement, but it was pretty funny. I thought James was doing pretty well singing and stuff.

- 7.5/10

WEEKEND UPDATE W/ COLIN QUINN

I loved it when Colin said the thing about "going after the tobacco companies but being brought down by cigars." Tracy Morgan's character seemed a little off, but it was funny when he asked Colin about seeing him at the "club."

- 7/10

MUSICAL PERFORMANCE, EVERLAST

Who the hell is Everlast?

- I can't grade this if I don't know who they are, sorry.

HARRY CONICK JR. SKIT

"I'd like to get back to my roots- the songs that made Frank Sinatra famous." That's priceless! I'm surprised that laser pointer skits haven't been done before- you'd think that the writers would've thought of something. It would be a good thing for maybe the Culp Music Teacher skits. Pretty funny, though.

- 7/10

HISTORY CHANNEL

"Naz-ees?" Mediocre. James Van Der Beek is like what, 12? Why is he playing a friggin' PROFESSER? Guess he wanted to know what is was like to have actual WHISKERS on his face.

- 5/10

NBC T.V

Cheri and Chris were both powerless under the attack of FrankenTeen- funny. "Crested Butte"? LOL!

- 5.5/10

T.V REPAIR

What is with Van Der Beek playing old characters? It was good to see Cheri to do one of her trademark "weird" characters- there hasn't been too much of her this season. Okay sketch, I guess.

- 6.5/10

Overall, this has been one of the better shows of the season. But then again, that isn't saying much.

OVERALL

8.5/10
