Lucy Lawless / Elliott Smith
October 17, 1998

[OPENING] NBC Special Report: Republicans Plans for the Future Excellent opening, Cheri was, as usual, great as Mary Bono. Really good writing for an opening, very topical and probably closer to the truth than the republicans would want you to believe. Grade: A-

[MONOLOGUE] Lucy Lawless- Starting off really good. I'm glad Lucy was able to make fun of herself and her show regarding the lesbian stuff. Her accent might get annoying as the night goes on. Grade:B

[COMMERCIAL] Shirt in a Can: Stupid, stupid, stupid!!! Waste of Tim's great talent. Grade:C-

[SKETCH] Judge Judy- I was waiting for the real Judge Judy to show up for two years now. You could tell she was reading off the cue cards. But, overall, was pretty funny and also willing to make fun of herself. Cheri was great as her "backup". Grade:B+

[MISCELLANEOUS] History of Presidential Scandals: I wonder how many of these will show up tonight. Awful, but thankfully very short. Grade: D

[SKETCH] White House in Crisis: I was hoping for something better. This started out really on the mark with the "Does she sleep with him anymore" and "Is Hillary pretty" questions, but degenerated by the time they called Vernon Jordan. Grade: C+

[TV FUNHOUSE] Fun With Real Audio: Saturday Howard Night Stern Live- Awesome, much better than Maakies or whatever last week;s crap was called. Very subversive. Great that Howard was feeding Robin sardines. Grade:A-

[COMMERCIAL] Stevie Nicks Fajita Roundup Best Lucy skit of the night. Really funny song parodies. This is how all commercials should be. I am beginning to hate the taped ones. Grade:A

[SKETCH] The, How do you say, Ah Yes! Show Chris was terrific in this one as was the new guy Ganz (I think that's his name). Loved how he segued from her book to her breasts. Grade:A-

[MISCELLANEOUS] History of Presidential Scandals- Here we go again. Worse than the first time. Grade:D-

[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Colin Quinn- Cut out the monologues. Chucky was really stupid. PLEASE BRING BACK NORM!!!!!!!! Grade:F

[MUSICAL GUEST] Elliott Smith- Who the hell is this? Grade:F

[SKETCH] A&E's Biography on Puff Daddy- Really funny for an after weekend update skit. I loved the huge but they put on Lucy. Again excellent use of song parodies. Grade:A-

[SKETCH] Terrance Maddox models for art class-Started off horribly but really picked up by the end. I loved the girls reaction when he got hard. This skit was much better after a second viewing. Grade:B

[SKETCH] Goth Talk goes to the mall- Could have been much better if the Goth's would have intereacted more with the customers or with the guy who took a dump in the show box. Chris was wasted in this.Grade:C

[SKETCH] The Kulps at the World Series- Not bad for a last act. The writers went nuts for the music tonight, probably because the musical guest was horrible. Grade:B+

OVERALL: Not as good as the Frasier show but not bad either. Lucy didn't do anything to distinguish herself. Nothing here will end up in a best of tape, but all the skits with the exception of history of the Presidential scandals, were decent. Grade: B
