John Goodman / Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
April 10, 1999

(OPENING) Clinton Goes Back To Lying: This is getting real old real fast. We have heard things about lying about telling the truth and all of that other stuff, but Darrell still does a good job at it.

C

(MONOLOGUE) John Goodman: I thought this was kind of funny. Apparently in 1991, he hosted SNL with Tom Petty also, and everyone, including Jimmy and Lorne thought it was a rerun. Kept me entertained.

B

(SKETCH) Adult Literacy Program: John did a good job as the "cool" kid and Tim likewise as the teacher, but they didn't have anything to work woth here.

C-

(COMMERCIAL) Shaun Mondavi Vineyards: Will always does well with sketches like these, and i'll bet that "wine" did taste awful. I liked the Mountain Dew bottle disquise.

B-

(COMMERCIAL) CNN Newstand: Although there are only 3 mags that CNN uses, SNL comes up with a few more. One of those commercials where I laugh because they're mocking a repetitive product.

B+

(SKETCH) Wrap It Up: Chris K. does an excellent job as the manager's son who can't wrap worth crap. but still gets credit. John is there with his usual hyper-madness when the customers complain about Chris's poor wrapping.

B-

(SKETCH) Hello Dolly: This should've been last. It was pretty awful. I chuckled at the Poopsie doll, but otherwise I was bored.

F

(WEEKEND UPDATE) They are getting better, I have to admit. Basically your usual update, with more than 1 joke in reference to Dan Quayle, which could be weird or mean.

B-

(MUSICAL GUEST) Don't watch these.

NA

(SKETCH) Santa Gets Drunk: A Santa sketch in April? Got me confused, and it wasn't funny either.

D

(SKETCH) Happy Smile Patrol: This should have come on earlier in the show. I loved this one. This one proves that even the happiest looking people do the worst things.

A

(COMMERCIAL) VH1 Behind the Music with Bun E. Carlos: Another one? Why do we need any more of these?

F

(MUSICAL GUEST) Don't watch these

NA

(SKETCH) Whorehouse's Data Entry: Not bad, but not great. Fair job by everyone, but not as funny as it seems.

C

(OVERALL) A John Goodman show with no Linda Tripp? Freaky. For the first bew show in 3 weeks, it wasn't that good. Best of the night were Happy Smile Patrol and CNN Newstand. Worst of the night were Hello Dolly and VH1 Behind the Music. Almost a month until a new episode with Cuba Gooding Jr.
