Sylvester Stallone / Jamiroquai
September 27, 1997
Hello ...
My name is Fred Williams. I am an air personality at WDRF-FM Teen Radio in Hartford, CT. I am also an avid watcher of "SNL." Enclosed is my review of the season premiere of "SNL."
[OPENING] Oprah's Book Club
I respect the acting abilities of Tim Meadows, but PLEASE this is LAME !! I never really quite understood the purpose of these sketches; however, the Marv Albert impression was quite superb. It is refreshing to notice that Tracy Morgan may get more of a chance to shine this season.

[MONOLOGUE] Sylvester Stallone
Speaking of acting talents, this man has NONE !! The "Rocky" cliche is getting just a BIT old after 21 years, don't you think?
Rating: 7.1 out of 10
[COMMERCIAL] Assjet Xerox
The "SNL" writers really blew this one ... a potentially excellent commercial parody was turned to crap with improper plotting. I hope to see better work this season than THIS.
Rating: 7.3 out of 10
[SKETCH] Rita Delvechio
Cheri Oteri amazes me. She is truly a talented person. I think the best of the overall mediocre impressions Sly Stallone portrayed was Rita's husband. Most likely one of the best sketches in the show.
Rating: 8.6 out of 10
[SKETCH] Car accident victim bad-mouths Stallone movies
This was a 3-minute sketch that would have been more proper as a minute sketch, maybe a minute and a half? This got very repetitive.
Rating: 6.5 out of 10
[SKETCH] Roxbury Guys
Wow...another excellent sketch bastardized ... this used to be a sketch that would generate laughs simply by mentioning its name. Not anymore.
Rating: 6.7 out of 10
[SKETCH] Janet Reno decides whether or not to investigate Clinton
Considering the show so far, I enjoyed this sketch. The funniest moment of the show, in my opinion, was watching Richard Jewell punch Janet Reno in the stomach and simply walk out. Reno is one of Ferrell's best impressions.
Rating: 8.1 out of 10
[TV FUNHOUSE] Fun With Real Audio: Casablanca Outtakes
I was under the impression that "SNL" catered to the young adult audience (12-30) how many have even WATCHED "Casablanca"? I haven't ... and I doubt much of it's audience has. Shabby.
Rating: 5.2 out of 10
[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Norm MacDonald
Norm was simply POOR Saturday night. He was pressing just a bit too much for laughs slight, inconspicuous egging is funny but this was too much. The audience didn't seem to respond well either.
Rating: 4.8 out of 10
[MUSICAL GUEST] Jamiroquai
I don't like this band much (which, being around alternative/ska/techno/metal music naturally, I can understand). As a matter of fact, I think they sound like Stevie Wonder, so I wasn't crazy over their performance. Get rid of the hat !!
Rating: 6.2 out of 10
[SKETCH] Computer Store
This was a repetitive, annoying, pointless sketch that went for the cheap laugh and failed even at that. Bah!
Rating: 4.6 out of 10
[THE LOST DEEP THOUGHTS] by Jack Handey
Did not watch and/or notice this sketch.
Rating: ?? out of 10
[SKETCH] Planet Hollywood
Did not watch and/or notice this sketch.
Rating: ?? out of 10
[SKETCH] Lou's Lovely Daughters
Did not watch and/or notice this sketch.
Rating: ?? out of 10
[COMMERCIAL] Elton John's Tributes to Other Dead Celebrities
I had barely been watching the TV at this point I was too busy puttering away at this here PC but when I heard Elton John's now-famous "Candle in the Wind" tribute to Princess Diana, my attention snapped straight to the tube!!
This was probably the best sketch on the show! (Yes, I know, it's the last, too odd, huh?) Maybe the writers should become lyricists full time?
OVERALL
This was a disappointing show. If things keep up this way, we could be looking at 1981 ratings soon ... but Oasis is on next week so I'll keep watching.
