Sylvester Stallone / Jamiroquai
September 27, 1997
[OPENING] Oprah's Book Club
Moderatly funny. It did have its good points. Like Morgan coming on as Tyson and saying Marv was provoked. All in all, not that bad.
Grade: B
[THEME SONG]
The music was preatty good. Some of the pictures were the best, some the worst. Cheri Oteri's picture was great, Darell Hammond's was terrible. I'm glad to see they gave credit to Rob Smigel.
[MONOLOGUE] Sylvester Stallone
I knew it, I just knew they were going to get a Rocky parody in there somehow. I loved it. Breuer's Mickey was great. And Morgan's Mr. T was the funniest I've ever seen him.
Grade: A
[COMMERCIAL] Assjet Xerox
Great Premise. Okay writing. It will be good if they don't overuse it.
Grade: B
[SKETCH] Rita Delvechio
Uhh ... if it wasn't for Stallone's appearence as Rita's husband, this skit would have BOMBED. I do not like the Rita character.
Grade: C+
[SKETCH] Car accident victim bad-mouths Stallone movies
I laughed so hard during this one. The interaction between Norm and Sly was classic. Ferrell added something special that's hard to explain.
Grade: A+
[SKETCH] Roxbury Guys
Before the show started, I dared "SNL" to do a Roxbury skit with Sly and make it fit. They did. Totally genius.
Grade: A+
[SKETCH] Janet Reno decides whether or not to investigate Clinton
Okay, so its not the Reno we've grown to know and ... tolerate. Pretty good, but they didn't take it as far as I'd like.
Grade: C-
[TV FUNHOUSE] Fun With Real Audio: Casablanca Outtakes
Loved it. Mixing farts with a movie like "Casablanca" was a stroke of genius.
Grade: A
[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Norm MacDonald
Not to many funny jokes this time around. Cinder Callhoon was just hilarious. Jewell was just a little nervous. Without the song, not the best "Update" to date.
Grade: B
[MISCELLANEOUS] Joe Pesci confronts Stallone
If only Pesci would have used the bat ...
Grade: B
[MUSICAL GUEST] Jamiroquai
Like all the musical guests, I didn't hear this one. Turned down the TV and took a nap.
[SKETCH] Computer Store
Sly really showed he has talent with this one. With anyone else, it would have been just another lame skit. But Sly put so much life into his character it was amazing.
Grade: A+
[THE LOST DEEP THOUGHTS] by Jack Handey
About time.
Grade: B
[SKETCH] Planet Hollywood
The usual stuff. Good for a laugh or two.
Grade: C
[SKETCH] Lou's Lovely Daughters
Once again, Sly showed that he is funny with this odd-ball skit that just works. The three ladies were wonderfull. If Sly ever returns, I hope they bring it back.
Grade: A+
[COMMERCIAL] Elton John's Tributes to Other Dead Celebrities
The show got cut off after the first song. The premise looked pretty funny, though.
Grade: ??
OVERALL
Great season opener. Good skits with great acting by the cast and the host.
