Jon Lovitz / Jane's Addiction
November 8, 1997
[OPENING] Bill Gates takes over the airwaves
Chris Kattan's Bill Gates impression was mediocre, and him and Ferrell were not that funny. Darrell Hammond talking about "giving Rhode Island to Iraq" and Breuer's Murdoch saved this skit.
Grade: B+
[MONOLOGUE] Jon Lovitz
Not bad. Lovitz is a lot better of a singer than I thought.
Grade: C+
[SKETCH] Fred the Baker's final Dunkin' Donuts commercial
This was pretty good. It had a good premise.
Grade: B+
[SKETCH] Larry King's Wedding Reception
Norm MacDonald's impression ruined the sketch. His lines were not funny and his impression was pathetic. The rest of it was excellent, though, especially Cheri Oteri and Dana Carvey.
Grade: A (without Norm), C- (with Norm)
[SKETCH] Win a Year with Jewel in the Alaskan Wilderness
Boooooring. It got old after about a minute.
Grade: D+
[TV FUNHOUSE] Fun with Real Audio
I like every TV Funhouse sketch, but the Ambiguously Gay Duo is better.
Grade: B
[SKETCH] The Ladies' Man
The lines about the old people were the best part, but the whole skit was amusing.
Grade: B+
[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Norm MacDonald
Tommy Flanagan, even though he was predictable, still cracked me up at the end with the line about "Boogie Nights."
Grade: A-
[SKETCH] Late Show with David Letterman
Norm's impression was dead on this time, but this skit just did not make me laugh very much ... the writing was pretty weak.
Grade: C+
[SKETCH] The Robin Byrd Show
Jon Lovitz's character was mildly amusing, but other than that it was not very funny.
Grade: C
[SKETCH] Celebrities record Set Our Nanny Free
Why the hell was this the last skit? It was certainly funnier than almost everything else in the show. Jon Lovitz was terrific as Sarah Ferguson.
Grade: A
OVERALL
I expected a lot more from Jon Lovitz. Where was Master Thespian? I love that character!
Grade: C
