Greg Kinnear / All Saints
April 11, 1998
Overview: Kinnear was in Dear God and A Smile Like Yours. All Saints are the Spice Girls. What kind of show do you think I was expecting?
Opening: Martha Stewart and a solid lead in on a very strong show. C+
Monolog: Suprisingly well delivered because, in retrospect, this pretty dumb. Undoubtedly Kinnear's willingness to joke about his Oscar loss makes it that much more memorable. A
Name That Dog: ? ! =) A(Yes. That's the reveiw.)
Cookie Dough Sport: Still don't like it. C-
Kulps: They lose an inch, they gain an inch. Back and forth they go. Up and down like a yo-yo. Its almost frustrating. B+
Fresco Date: "The arouser in my trousers." Need I say more? B+
TV Funhouse: Not only is it a rerun its an old rerun. Otherwise I'd give it an "A". Otherwise what's the point? The musical guest could have performed a second number. Why throw time away on stuff we've seen before? B
House of Dogs: A cute idea and not the sort of thing that gets a lot of respect because its so obvious in its humour. Maybe it could have been higher in quality but if I'm going to watch obvious humour I'd take this over Goat Boy any day. C+
Weekend Update: Just the usual Quinn mediocrity although while watching it I felt it was unusually atrocious even by his standards. Thank god the summer break is around the corner. F
All Saints: By this time I was a little sick of "I Know Where Its At" so I was kind of glad to see them sing, well, something else. As it stands I actually think "Never Ever" is a far stronger song. B
Nightline: Not quite a slam dunk with schtick concerning Koppel's brother but it comes close. Very close. A-
Pirate Ship: Like "House of Dogs" its an inane idea but the performances and writing here is far brighter. Of course when you're performing with a guy like Bob Hoskins you want to be good. A-
Robin Byrd: My personal feeling is that they stopped this installment way too soon. A nice feeling since the usual feeling is that these things run too long. This recurring character has finally hit it's stride. B
Later Reunion: Remember that skit from some time ago where the boat was loaded with baseball players with almost no room for actual customers/passengers of the fantasy cruise? It was original then. C
Deep Thoughts: As with the cold opening a strong ending to one of my favourite episodes of the year. But Handey is always great so that's not suprising. A
Overall: The year's big shocker. I was not prepared for the quality of this outing(obviously) by any stretch of the imagination. The year's second best broadcast. What was the first? Read them all. You're all big boys and girls. You don't need me to show you. ; ) A-
