EPISODE REVIEWS

Greg Kinnear / All Saints
April 11, 1998

SKETCH: Martha Stewart Easter

What was all the anti-Semetic stuff about? Has there been some flap about the real Martha hating Jews? Not a bad skit, but not opener material.

RATING: 7/10

MONOLOGUE: Greg Kinnear

Not bad. Kinnear seems more at ease doing monologues than most hosts, probably because of his stint hosting "Later".

RATING: 8/10

COMMERCIAL: Cookie Dough Sport Drink

It was funny the first time.

RATING: NA (repeated commercial)

SKETCH: Name that Dog

This was pretty funny. SNL has been doing some great game show sketches lately, with this, "Who's More Grizzled" and the greatest of them all, "Old French Whore." One of the dog's names was Trooper, which as coincedence would have it, is my dog's name.

RATING: 9/10

SKETCH: Kulps at rehab clinic

From reading other reviews, I take it that the Kulps aren't exactly the most loved characters on SNL. I don't care, I like them anyway. This one, however, was a bit lacking.

RATING: 6.5/10

SKETCH: B-Ball

Nothing bad, nothing good.

RATING: 6.5/10

CARTOON: Fun with Real Audio

At first, I didn't get it, but the last half was really funny. Now, I like these Real Audio things, and the X-Presidents and all, but........... WHERE THE HELL ARE THE AMBIGUOUSLY GAY DUO??!!

RATING: 7/10

SKETCH: House of Dogs

This one was a write-off, except for the use of the "Name that Dog" host. Not often do SNL skits overlap.

RATING: 5.5/10

WEEKEND UPDATE w/Colin Quinn

A few good jokes. However, the Colin Quinn version of Easter was lame, Gunnar Olsen isn't that funny. Worst of all, Colin dissed U2! Did he actually critisize Zoo TV, probably the best tour of the '90's? It's called "evolving as a band", Colin.

RATING: 6.5/10

MUSIC: All Saints

Pretty good. Much better than the Spice Girls' less than spirited performance from last year. Also pretty easy on the eyes :)

RATING: 8/10

SKETCH: Ted Koppel's brother

Pretty funny, but got old.

RATING: 7/10

SKETCH: Long Plank

This was funny! Why was this so late in the show?

RATING: 9/10

SKETCH: The Robin Byrd Show

SNL ripped off the WWF! Okay, the World Wrestling Federation is bringing in a new wrestler named Val Venis, who's gimmick is that he is a porn star. Anyway, this Venis character mentioned that he was in a film called "As Hard As It Gets." What a coincedence! Um, anyway, this wasn't that good.

RATING: 6/10

SKETCH: Convention of hosts of Later

Not bad. Darryl's Bob Costas is dead-on. The look on Bob Hoskins face when he was interviewed by everyone was priceless.

RATING: 7.5/10

DEEP THOUGHTS

Pretty poor.

RATING: 5/10

GOODBYES: I usually don't include these in reviews, but I noticed something odd. Greg Kinnear is on a stage with Ana, Cheri, Molly and the All Saints, and the only people he hugs are Bob Hoskins, Breuer and Kattan?! What's up with that?

SUMMARY: Not a bad show. Greg Kinnear was a pretty good host, if a bit of a ham.

OVERALL RATING: 7/10
