Samuel L. Jackson / Ben Folds Five
January 10, 1998

[OPENING] President Clinton's $40 billion movie project

Very funny opener! Darell Hammond's Clinton is great as usual. The writing was funny as hell. I loved the movie poster.

Grade: A-

[MONOLOGUE] Samuel L. Jackson

Funny stuff. Samuel L. Jackson can make any phrase sound cool such as "I will continue to kick ass." He was totally into it and that made even better.

Grade: A

[COMMERCIAL] Lemon Glow Floor Cleaner

Fairly funny commercial parody.

Grade: B-

[SKETCH] Publisher's Clearing House Giveaway

Great sketch, the second best of the night! Samuel L.'s lines were funny and I also liked the dog attacking Will Ferrell at the end. Good stuff!

Grade: A

[SKETCH] Bravo's Interview with Quentin Tarentino

The only thing including Norm MacDonald in the episode. Norm has the impersonation of Quentin Tarantino down pretty good. I wish Norm would do more impersonations of different people. His Burt Reynold's was funny as ever. "Hey Quentin, is this whole movie about burgers?" It was cool to see Samuel L. in his full fledged costume of Jules from "Pulp Fiction."

Grade: A-

[SKETCH] PBS's Jazzterpieces

Samuel L. Jackson and Ana Gasteyer made a great duo in this funny, but slow sketch. There were some good lines though.

Grade: C+

[SKETCH] Judge Judy

The third funniest sketch of the night. Finally a sketch where Cheri Oteri is actually funny and not annoying. Great cross over with Samuel's character Ordell from "Jackie Brown."

Grade: A

[TV FUNHOUSE] George Clooney

Damn funny cartoon by Robert Smigel & Co! I bet George was laughing his ass off.

Grade: A+

[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Colin Quinn

Colin made some interesting and funny comments in his first hosting gig as head anchor for "Weekend Update." Norm will be missed for a long time though. But Colin was funny and will eventually gel together his own style of "Weekend Update" reporting better. Will Ferrell's Harry Caray was hilarious as usual.

Grade: A

[MUSICAL GUEST] Ben Folds Five (performing 'Brick')

Pretty good performance by a highly unknown band. Good musical rhythms.

Grade: A-

[SKETCH] Titanic's evacuation

The funniest sketch of the show, hands down! The best line of all was when Ferrell said, "Please put remaining life boats into other life boats." I was rolling on the ground. Pure comedy. One of the best of the entire season.

Grade: A+

[SKETCH] Mango breaks another heart

Another okay sketch that could've been better. It was funny to see Samuel L. dreaming of Mango and smiling while whispering "Mango!"

Grade: C

[SKETCH] The Learning Annex

Funny sketch with funny characters. Samuel L. had me laughing out loud.

Grade: A-

[SKETCH] The Playboy Channel

A typical filler sketch to round out the show with. But it was fairly funny watching Samuel L. Jackson saying "Let's get it on!"

Grade: B-

[COMMERCIAL] The Weston Collection's I'm #1

Still funny the second time around. Another filler to waste time though.

Grade: B-

OVERALL

One of the funniest episodes of the year. It only lacked the appearance of Norm MacDonald in a sketch who was not even seen at the end when Samuel L. thanked everyone. But it was a brilliantly funny performance with some awesome writing.

Grade: A+
