EPISODE REVIEWS

John Goodman / Paula Cole
February 7, 1998

Opening: This sketch was OK, but the intentionall microphone backfeed was annoying. Norm MacDonald and his Bob Dole will be sorely missed. Grade: C

Monologue: Great. It would have worked out better though if the Blues Brothers were the musical guests and the monologue was the usual. Grade: B+

Morning Latte: OK at first, but then it started dragging. Became lame quickly. Annoying. Grade: D+

Bill Clinton and the Ten Commandments: Darrell Hammond's Clinton is, as usual, right on the money. The sketch was funny and entertaining. One of the best of the night. Grade: A

CBS Eye on the Olympics: Figure skating sketches have never bbeen funny on SNL. The impersonations were very bad. Grade: F

TV Funhouse: The X-Presidents are the funniest TV Funhouse behind the Ambigously Gay Duo. Great plot. Could've done without the X-First Ladies, but oh well. Grade: A-

Emeril Live: Pointless sketch. William Ginsburg had nothing to do with food, it clashed terribly. Grade: F

Weekend Update: I'll grow to like Colin Quinn, but SNL needs to find someone who's much more upbeat and has less personal commentary. Jokes were OK. Grade: C+

Musical Guest: Paula Cole made good music. Seemed out of place though right after Weekend Update. Grade: B+

Judge Judy: Cheri Oteri is good as the Judge. This can work as a recurring skit, but needs to be farther apart from the previous one. Grade: B-

Martha Stewert Living: I guess that's Ana Gasteyer, I'm bad with cast members' faces. Well, whoever it is, they are as close as one could posssibly get to being Martha Stewert. the sketch was funny and pretty good, I don't know why SNL insists that it's on CBS, because her program is syndicated. Oh well, that doesn't matter. Grade: A

Sabado Chisto: This was the better place for William Ginsburg. The Spanish was pretty good to my suprise. For those that know basic Spanish, it was pretty funny. Grade: B

When Cobras Attack: Blah, blah. Whatever. I was falling asleep. Grade: C

Storytellers: Same as above. Grade: C

Overall: Average show. As the host, John Goodman wasn't used nearly enough. Dan Aykroyd was good too. Host grade: C+. Special Guest grade: B. Show grade: C+
