[OPENING] Farley gets permission to host
Chris Farley scares me. I always expect him to be doing his antics and just fall over dead from a massive coronary. But anyway, was there really a point to this opener? Was any of this based on reality
Grade: C-
[MONOLOGUE] Chris Farley
Uh, I wasn't too impressed. Why was everybody so droll? But this was redeemed by the ever-hilarious Chris Rock.
Grade: B
[COMMERCIAL] Yum Bubble Genital Herpes Gum
I don't even WANT to know where the idea for this came from. Could they have said the words "genital herpes" more in the span of thirty seconds? Not without humor, but not fantastic. However, I'm always nice to new commercials because I love them.
Grade: B
[SKETCH] Morning Latte
I DESPISED this the first time through, but watching it again on tape, I rather liked it! The hosts of a saccharine morning talk show finally push their producer over the edge with their idiocy. "Over the weekend, you stupid bitch!" (Oh, and their stand on shootings was hilarious!)
Grade: A-
[SKETCH] Mary Katherine Gallagher
I felt terrible for Chris Farley's character in this sketch. He was so sweet, and Mary just treats him like crap. She doesn't deserve him. (Of course, my extremely low opinion of Mary Katherine could be the reason for this ... ) The disco was weird enough.
Grade: C
[COMMERCIAL] Martha Stewart: Living promo
This was great. The impression of Martha Stewart was immaculate, and the thought of her egging a house or setting fire to a bag of dog poop is too funny. "I spend 364 days a year suppressing the demons inside me, but on All Hallow's Eve, I invite them to dance. It's a good thing."
Grade: A
[SKETCH] Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker
I loved Matt Foley when Chris Farley was a cast member. Unfortunately though, this was not so good. Just wasn't up to par. But for a rehash, it wasn't bad. Something was just off. [Incidentally, my favorite Matt Foley appearances ever: The one in Spanish ("Me llamo Matt Foley, soy tres divorianos, y yo vivo en un VAN CERCA DEL RIO!") and the one with Christina Applegate ("You'll have plenty of time for living in a van down by the river... when you're LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!")]
Grade: B-
[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Norm MacDonald
The Bill Gates "earth crashing into the sun" thing was good, as was the headless humans giving Norm nightmares and the Ross Perot jab. Classic Norm. But Tracy Morgan was the highlight. "I'm Tracy Morgan, the other black guy!"
Grade: A
[SKETCH] Goth Talk
It's no wonder Todd/Azriel gets tortured by his brother constantly. What a loser. But that doesn't mean I don't still love him! (Especially his job at Cinnabuns! They should show footage of him working there!)
Grade: B+
[THE LOST DEEP THOUGHTS] by Jack Handey
Nothing spectacular, but it's Jack Handey! How can I possibly give this a low grade?
Grade: B
[SKETCH] The Sally Show
This was just fantastic! Why wasn't this on earlier? This was clearly the best sketch of the night! My favorite parts: the book "My God, These Enormous Children With Their Disproportionate Strength and Inability to Logic Are Sure to Rise Up and Destroy Us," the perfect way Chris Farley acted like a toddler, Cheri Oteri's character altogether (especially the fertility drugs by junior prom), the baby pregnant with a baby who is also pregnant, and Tim Meadows fighting not to laugh as Chris Farley whispered and blew into his ear. Quite a feat, and quite a sketch!
Grade: A+
NOTE: This is where my VCR stopped taping, so all reviews after this are just from my first watching.
[SKETCH] Hank Williams Jr. records Monday Night Football song
To me, the most annoying thing in this sketch was the recording people. Come on, couldn't they enjoy Hank's antics as the redneck hilarity that it is? And it ended cheesily too. Bleah.
Grade: D+
[SKETCH] The Super Fans ... where are they now?
When I realized what this was, I was ECSTATIC! The return of the Super Fans! Yes! And it was almost as good as I hoped. My favorite part, hands down, was the deprogramming scene! Whoa!
Grade: A-
[SKETCH] El Nino fights on The Weather Channel
This was funny too! For a final segment, this was marvelous. Loved the entire idea. (BTW, I was cheering for El Nino during the fight. Were you?)
Grade: B+
