EPISODE REVIEWS

David Duchovny / Puff Daddy featuring Jimmy Page
May 9, 1998

[OPENING] Deep Throat's Identity Is Finally Revealed

Not a bad opener, from what I heard of it. I was watching this with a lot of my friends so the audio was somewhat garbled. Janet Reno is arguably Will's best character.

RATING: 7/10 (probably should be higher, but I didn't hear it)

[MONOLOGUE] David Duchovny

The best monologue I've seen in a long time. The fact that Duchovny played it totally straight faced was the best part.

RATING: 9/10

[SKETCH] The Spartan Cheerleaders At Camp Paula Abdul

With the exception of one line, this was forgettable. The line? "I'm still technically a virgin, except for that biking accident." Classic.

RATING: 6.5/10

[CARTOON] The Ambiguously Gay Duo

They're back! Funny as always, but I think having the villains constantly question about them got a bit old.

RATING: 8.5/10

[SKETCH] Celebrity Jeopardy

Darryl doesn't really do a good Sean Connery, which is a shame because he gets all of the best lines. Molly's Minnie Driver fell victim to the old syndrome of "We can't make the character funny, so let's make her stupid." However, seeing this sketch made me miss Norm MacDonald. What's a game of Celebrity Jeopardy without Burt Reynolds?

RATING: 8.5/10

[MUSICAL GUEST] Puff Daddy featuring Jimmy Page

My friend is a big Led Zeppelin fan, and was in agony over seeing this song butchered. Puff Daddy's voice seems to have dropped a few octaves; did he have a cold?

RATING: 6/10

[WEEKEND UPDATE] Colin Quinn, Tracy Morgan, Ana Gasteyer

A few funny bits. I still think Colin Quinn isn't really right for Update. Maybe for next season they'll bring in someone else (Craig Kilborn?)

RATING: 7.5/10

[SKETCH] David Duchovny Falls For Mango

These skits are all exactly the same. John Goodman's appearance was a pleasant surprise, but people who missed the show previously wouldn't get it.

RATING: 6/10

[SKETCH] The Oprah Winfrey Show

Tim has got his Oprah impression back to it's usual high level. Goat Boy is always funny but Duchovny did a rather poor impression.

RATING: 7.5/10

[COMMERCIAL] Interbank Traveler's Checks

Funny.

RATING: 7/10

[SKETCH] The Story Of The Space Shuttle

Not bad. "I am Clinton! I like sex!" got the best laugh.

RATING: 7/10

[SKETCH] The Go Lords

Never really got the appeal of these things. Some of my (female) friends who were watching this with me were appalled at the notion of Leo as a villain.

RATING: 6/10

[SHORT] The Lost Deep Thoughts

Lame. I can see why these Deep Thoughts were lost in the first place.

RATING: 5/10

OVERALL:

A good solid show to end the year. This was the first year that I really started watching SNL full time, and it was overall a pretty good year. I'd like to thank Sean Bradley and Joel for putting my reviews on their respective web sites. As a final thought, good luck to Tim Meadows if he does indeed leave SNL.

OVERALL RATING: 7.5/10
