David Duchovny / Puff Daddy featuring Jimmy
Page
May 9, 1998
Opening: A top fiver. "Name: Fox...I'll say!" They haven't really worn out Reno this season either. A-
Monologue: Uhhh... It was funny when he smashed his guitar. That's about it. C
Paula Abdul Spartan Cheers: Okay. The Titanic cheers are a hard act to follow...but even though the premise was just a lame excuse for a special guest, the cheers were really funny. Good thing it was the finale though, because they've used the Spartans just a few too many times this season. A-
Gay Duo: Okay, the first time, really funny! The second, still amusing. third, fourth, fifth... tolerable. Whatever this was was just blatantly gross and lacked all humor. D-
Celebrity Jeopardy: It had been a while since the last one of these and it brought some new characters. Not as good as John Goodman's (When he took off his pants, played with puppets, and wrote "POOP!") but "The Rapists" and "Are you English or stupid?" redeemed the sketch. A
Puff Daddy/Jimmy Page: Usually, I hate the musical guest. Wasn't too fond of Puffy before, but I did like this song, and Jimmy Page was awesome. A
Weekend Update: Nothing extremely special about this WU. But I like Quinn's style. I'm sure the vast majority disagree, but...but...Norm sucked guys! Like a bad David Letterman. B
Mango: He never really appealed to me. It's just the same thing over and over. If they could just change it a little! The Garth Brooks one might have been funny had I not knew exactly what was going to happen. Same here. But because of Matt Lauer and Al Rokar, I give it a C+. (Up from otherwise a D-) John Goodman??? What was that? C+
Oprah/Goat Boy: The Goat Boy concept could have been milked out for at most 3 sketches, now they've just crossed the line. Oprah was decent on occasion if there was a reason for it. (ie: Cattle Lawsuit) but why this? F
Bank Commercial: I laughed...but maybe it was just because I was due a laugh after Oprah/Goat Boy. C
To the Moon and Back: Just when I though the show had lost all hope, a genuine laugh when Meadows impersonates Clinton. Otherwise, I don't take HBO, so I can't connect to the whole "From the Earth to the Moon" thing. B-
Go Lords: The best of the series... but, these just aren't funny. The evil Jim was funny. Not that I'm not sick of Titanic jokes or anything. I am thinking of the right show right? It's been so long since I've seen it. C+
Deep Thoughts: Am I missing something?? The old ones were funny. D
Overall: Pretty poor for a finale. Maybe if they toggled the order and forgot about Goat Boy an the Gay Duo... The musical guests redeemed it though. And even though most everything was poor...what was good was really good! B-
