EPISODE REVIEWS

Garth Brooks
February 28, 1998

[OPENING] Bill, Monica, Saddham, & Tim Chat Over The Phone

Nothing like a weird sketch to start off the show. Pretty funny.

RATING: 7.5/10

[MONOLOGUE] Garth Brooks

One of the better monologues of the year. The psychedelic stuff came out of nowhere.

RATING: 8.5/10

[SKETCH] What's In A Real Cowboy?

Funny idea, but went on just a bit too long.

RATING: 7/10

[SKETCH] Garth Brooks Falls For Mango

This was probably the best Mango sketch of them all. Garth played it completely straight, which made it all the more funnier. Why is it only men who get obsessed by Mango? By the way, was that really Garth Brooks's daughter?

RATING: 8/10

[SKETCH] The Oprah Winfrey Show

Tim's Oprah is really starting to slip, but the beef stuff was hilarious.

RATING: 7/10

[CARTOON] Fun With Real Audio

I never really like these. This may sound naive, but who was the guy telling the long story?

RATING: 6/10

[SKETCH] Old French Whore!

ABSOLUTELY FREAKING HILARIOUS! Definitely a contender for the "Best Of.." show.

RATING: 9.5/10

[WEEKEND UPDATE] Colin Quinn, Ana Gasteyer, Garth Brooks

Average update. Cinder Calhoun is really starting to annoy me. The only bad thing about Lilith Fair coming back for another year is that this character will be back.

RATING: 6.5/10

[SKETCH] Who's More Grizzled?!

Two game shows in one show? This was also very funny. I believe this sketch has the infamy of being the last sketch done on SNL by the great Norm MacDonald. Norm rules!

RATING: 8.5/10

[MUSICAL GUEST] Garth Brooks

To be honest, I couldn't tell you one Garth Brooks song. This was okay, even though I don't care much for country music.

RATING: 6/10

[SKETCH] Hey, Remember The 80's

Ahh, Goatboy. Eases the pain. I didn't recognize most of the eighties singers, which was probably the point.

RATING: 6.5/10

[SKETCH] Movie Previews At Loews Theatre

Tracy Morgan stole this one.

RATING: 6.5/10

[SKETCH] Bart Leslie Sings For Mr. Preston

Last sketch= blah.

RATING: 6/10

OVERALL: Very good show, maybe the strongest of the year. I missed most of the first airing of this show because of a school dance, and I heard nothing but good things about the episode from my wallflower friends who didn't go to said dance. Garth Brooks did a great job as host.

OVERALL RATING: 8/10
