Well, tonight is the season finale. I've managed to write a review for every episode except one, I'd say that's pretty good! Tonight is also Will Ferrell's last show. That sucks. Will was great. Probably the most consistently funny cast member. He was even funny in a bad sketch. He will be missed by everyone.
Let's start things off by diving into the mail sack.
From "Guffypup Roberts":
CONGRATS ON YOUR SNL REVIEW OF THE IAN MCKELLAN EPISODE
BJORK MUST NOT BE MOCKED
RED LEADER, RETURN TO BASE IMMEDIATELY
David Alan Grier
Wow, thanks David Alan Grier. You were great in McHale's Navy.
But you are completely right, Bjork is great, Bjork is sacred, Bjork is all that is wonderful. Mock not the Bjork.
Just for everyone's information, the real Bjork's last appearance on SNL was 1987 with Brendan Frasier, and before that was 1988 with the Sugarcubes and Matthew Broderick. Apparently she only shows up when guys-who-play-dorks-in-movies-but-are-actually-cool-in-real-life host. We need to get Anthony Edwards to host again.
On to the review!
Great Carter impression by Darrell, and a pretty good Castro impression by Will. I forgot that Carter was attacked by a rabbit! That is even more pathetic than Bush choking on a pretzel. As far as this opening sketch goes, I give it the same letter that sounds like "Barbara Bush buys baked beans". Anyone catch that obscure "Letter-People" reference? God, I'm old.
LIVE FROM NEW YORK IT's...
Will (in Spanish)/Maya (in English)
This has to be a new record for most people in a monologue ever.
It was very funny though.
Darrell is the father of Ana's baby?
Tina Fey shaves her face before each episode?
Jimmy urinates in Lorne's coffee?
Horatio is a crossdresser?
CELEBRITY JEOPARDY (ROCK AND ROLL EDITION)
The contestants are: Sean Connery, Dave Matthews, and ... BJORK!!! David Alan Grier, they are mocking Bjork again! Are you going to stand for that? Let's me, you, and Bjork go down and beat Lorne like Bjork beat that photographer. Oh by the way, this was very funny and a great way to send off CJ, with the real Alex Trebek making an appearance.
Great line: "Are you icelandic or retarded?"
MY 2 DADS WEDDING
This wasn't all that funny until Horatio starting doing the "interpretive" hand gestures. Plus the way Parnell and Will sing made it decent.
This is the Bearologist sketch that was shown way back on the A&E special, but was cut a long time ago.
It started out hilarious, with the bear killing the guy with a GUN instead of mauling him. However the premise kind of went out the window when it was revealed that it was just a guy in a bear suit. I think it would have been better if the bear had just kept killing the witnesses in non-bear ways. Like they should have had the bear strangle a guy, or poison someone that would have been funny. Still, a decent sketch. Why was Winona wearing Tina's glasses?
Classic, making fun of Botox. Showing them all drooling at the end was great.
GIRL NEXT DOOR
Anybod remember when FOX had decent programming? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? OK well now they have gone to new lows in programming by getting "Girl Next Door", where girls try out to be a Playboy centerfold. Pretty sad. Anyhow this sketch was not bad.
"Babies" rant: A
Neil Diamond: A-
This was great, they brought back the Weekend Update all-stars, which consists of Gay Hitler, Jeraldo Rivera, Drunk Girl, and the REAL NEIL DIAMOND!!! Neil thought this was a "Cheers" reunion and called Tina "Rhea Perlman". Ironically, I am watching Cheers as I type this review. Carla just insulted Diane again. Hi-LAR-ious!
I think something was wrong though with the mike system. It sounded like the real Neil's mike was off.
And what was up with that idiot laughing at the beginning of WU? I wonder if they threw him out.
This is Moby's latest single "We Are All Made of Stars". Not bad.
Typical "Luvahs" sketch, where the Luvahs meet Jimmy Fallon in the haht-ub again.
Underneath the waters is an antfarm of activity. I almost saw Will's nugget pouch.
Oh geez. If there was any doubt that Mango is officially run into the ground, this sketch should alleviate that doubt.
Winona did her part very well, though as did Moby (I liked the "I HEART EMINEM" shirt). Which is the only reason I give this sketch:
MUSICAL ACT 2
This is Moby's not-so-new single "South Side" which features Gwen Stefani. No Gwen today though.
TRIBUTE TO WILL
Wow, this was great. I don't think anyone in the history of SNL has ever had a send-off like this. I can guarantee he will be back to host next season. He will probably become the next John Goodman or Alex Baldwin, hanging around the set and showing up in sketches even without being the host. I noticed the new people (Amy,Jeff,Dean,Seth) didn't have anything to say. I guess they didn't know Will that well.
This was one big Will Ferrell love-fest. As far as the sketches, most were good, but not amazing. One of the better episodes of the season, but not the best. The new guys didn't do too much. I wonder who will be back next season?
BEST SKETCH: Monologue, Celebrity Jeopardy, Tribute to Will
WORST SKETCH: Mango
PEOPLE WITH TIME TO OPEN FAN MAIL TO WILL FERRELL: Dean (1 sketch)
MISTAKES: Guy laughing in WU, microphone problems with Neil Diamond
OVERALL GRADE: B+
That's the 2001-2002 season and I... am... outta here!
See ya next season!
