Wow, a new show at last. I've been going through withdrawals. Lately I've been running up to random people on the street and shouting "SIMMA DOWN NA!" and "BY THE WAY - YOU'RE WELCOME!" for no apparent reason. I've also had a chance to catch up on Mad TV. Does anyone ever leave Mad TV? Even Tim Meadows thinks some of these people have overstayed their welcome.
Anyhow, tonight we have host Jonny Mosely, who came in fourth at this year's Olympics, but won gold back in Nagano. Generally sports-related hosts do not do well on SNL (remember Nancy Kerrigan?) but Jonny seems pretty cool so we will see.
Musical guest for this evening is Outkast. I am not a big fan, but of all the rap groups they could have picked, this is the one that doesn't make me want to puke too much. I actually like their song "Miss Jackson". The Mad TV parody of that song is awesome too.
So on to the review.
Whatever Bush doesn't like, he places in the "Axis of Evil".
This was OK, but it was no "Where's Waldo".
LIVE FROM NEW YORK IT'S...
Apparently Don Pardo is sick or something.
We have Jimmy Fallon doing his Pardo impression.
And... and... what's this? Do my ears deceive me?
Parnell is back baby!!
*and there was much rejoicing*
If this was what the party looks like for the 4th placers, I wonder what the party for the last placers looks like?
Anyhow this was funny; a good monologue. Even though Jonny speaks quickly and sometimes not distinctly.
SULLY AND DENISE
[Rachel, Jimmy, Horatio, Jonny]
"..only one *oops* two things..." - Jonny Mosely's first slip up.
This sketch was OK, nothing great. Time to retired the Bahstahn Teens before they go the way of Dog Show.
This was great. I've been waiting for people to make fun of this guy.
O'Reilly is another so-called journalist who makes his fame by being an extremist.
He will never admit if he is wrong, and he never engages in any sort of fair debate.
Basically he's just a loudmouth who thinks everyone is entitled to his opinion.
Funny sketch too.
Yeah this is another insipid little show from MTV.
The real show is so inane that it really doesn't deserve mockery.
Nevertheless, this sketch was OK.
I laugh every time I hear Kattan whine, 'leave me alone!' - he should develop this into a regular character.
I have never heard a Jewish person say "heavens to mergatroid" - unless Snagglepuss was Jewish.
I think this was written by Jack Handey.
"I distracted Saudi Arabia *oops*" - Second Jonny Mosely slip up.
Yeah, so Jonny Mosely flies around the world doing good deeds. Weird.
The voiceover is still Amy, not Parnell.
Canadian Skaters [Will & Amy]: B
OK, what the hell was this.
I have no idea, but I laughed my ass off. I don't know why. It was possibly the most awful thing I have recently seen.
So I give it a F for awfulness, but a A for making me laugh.
Goof: They put the ABC-letterman picture up for the Skiing joke.
Outkast - brought to me by Bud Light
This song was OK. Not great. But it could have been worse. At least it wasn't Bubba Sparxx.
Ah yes, another "parade of impressions" sketch.
Easiest way to do these is grade the impressions on an individual basis.
Parnell - All I know is, gigantic thin microphone = FUNNY! A
George Gaynes - Obscure '80s actor reference, great impression by Jimmy = FUNNY! A
Nipsey Russell - Decent impression by Dean. A-
Charo - Wow. I'll be replaying this many times over the next week or two. Hoochie Coochie Maya! A
Waylon Flowers & Madame - Another obscure reference. Sadly, I know who this guy is. He probably hangs out with Kattan. B
Joanne Worley - Ana plays her perfectly. A
Richard Dawson - Seth did ok here. B
LaWanda Page - Why must Tracy always portray a woman? B
Paul Lynde - Paul Lynde was awesome, and Will nails his voice and mannerisms perfectly. A
Brett Somers - OK I know this chick was on Match Game, but I'm not sure what she even looks like. Talk about obscure.
Maryann Mobley - More obscurity. I think I'm one of the few people who knows who this woman is. Tina did her well. B
Truman Capote - Not too bad, but Horatio just isn't flamboyant enough to capture Truman Capote. B
Rip Taylor - Worst impression of the night.
TYPHOID MARY THE MUSICAL
What the hell was this. I didn't get any of it.
I didn't think Ana's Carol Channing impression was that good, either.
BIG THICK NOVEL
MUSICAL GUEST II
Ah, Miss Jackson. Not a bad song at all. These guys are weird though.
BIG THICK NOVEL II
Hm, the guy wears a "Jack Handey" name tag.
This gets an F just for being the second Jack Handey thing in 1 episode.
Man, everything was going good until the last half hour. What happened? It's like they just gave up and said, "Screw it, we'll just fill the time with Jack Handey crap". Jonny Mosely was decent, and by that I mean he didn't suck as bad as most other sports-related hosts. Outkast was decent, and by that I mean they weren't Bubba Sparxx. At least Chris Parnell is back, and that can't be a bad thing.
BEST SKETCH: Super Buzzers, O'Reilly Factor, Monologue
WORST SKETCH: Big Thick Novels, Typhoid Mary the Musical
MOST USED PLAYER: Jimmy, Parnell, Amy (5 sketches each)
PEOPLE WITH TIME TO HUNT DOWN AXIS OF EVIL MEMBER NICK MAYHEW: Darrell (0 sketches; I heard he is ill)
MISTAKES: 2 lines flubbed by Mosely, Wrong picture during the news
ADS FEATURING EX-SNL CAST MEMBERS: 3 (Colin Quinn for his new show, Julia Louis Dreyfus for Ellie, Eddie Murphy for his new movie)
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Jon Stewart (yes!) with musical guest
India.Arie (yeah SNL put that dot in her name. I don't know why.)
See you then!
