Derek Jeter / Bubba Sparxxx, Shakira
December 1, 2001

Guess what folks?

It's time for another installation of "Renee Epstein's Lame-Ass Reviews",
also known as "Renee is too overworked and tired to write a decent review
that is up to her lofty standards and is once again sending this in at the
last possible minute."

So here's the deal: Same as last time with Billy Bob Thornton, I'm just gonna
mention the notable sketches that I enjoyed. I didn't expect a stellar job
from Derek Jeter-any time an athlete has hosted SNL it hasn't been that
great. I figured he'd put in his best, though. I don't know much about
Shakira other than the fact that her song "Wherever Whenever" really
irritates me and Bubba Sparks is a rapper which means I really don't give a
crap about him.

So here we go:

The Inglasias (I sooo didn't spell that right, did I?) brothers sketch had me
in hysterics. Jimmy did a great impression of Enrique "My Hero Song Is Trite
and Wimpy and Bad" Inglasias (I love Jimmy!), Chris did a good Julio Jr., and
Derek was hilarious as the other brother "with the irregular mole". Great
stuff. Derek seems to have a good sense of humor and is willing to do silly
stuff like this. Coolness.

The Yankee wives sketch was funny only because of Amy Pohler. And Derek was
willing to dress like a woman, which just proves once more that even though
he may be a bad actor, he's willing to do anything for a laugh.

The Dealing with Mom and Dad sketch was great because it reminded me of all
the stupid kid sitcoms I used to watch on weekends when I was little, à la
Saved by the Bell. Derek was great in this. Something about an athlete
willing to help a kid seek revenge against mean kids is kinda cool. Amy got
on my nerves in this one. She overacted a bit.

UmmmDerek Jeter's Taco Hole was funny just because Will looked so goofy
dancing in the background. And Horatio looked so goofy in general. And
Derek wasn't even pretending to play the guitar. The song got annoying,
though. (Jimmy was in this, thoughthat makes me happy.)

Weekend Update had some good jokes, but it was the point/counterpoint between
Derek and Seth was made it great. Seriously, I'm not shitting you, Bostoners
HATE the Yankees. I was in Boston all summer living near Fenway Park. They
sell "Yankees Suck" shirts outside the stadium. The atmosphere is so tense
when the Yankees show upit's really funny. I still love Jimmy, but his
haircut is starting to look uglier and uglier. I wish he'd do one of three
things: a) get a new look b) learn how to make his current haircut not ugly
or c) go back to the spikes. The George Harrison tribute was really nice,
too. Man. I can't believe he's gone. That man was so incredibly talented
and nobody even realized it half the time because Lennon and McCartney
overshadowed him. He was brilliant. The music world has lost a great man.
Now there are only two Beatles left. I think I'm going to cry. Seriously.

Okay, I'm better now.

The Christmas song was adorable as ever. Tracy always cracks me up because
he looks so solemn as he dances there like that. Kattan just gets hammier
and hammier every time they do this. Horatio was good as usual and Jimmy's
(did I mention I love him?) haircut improved in my book only slightly because
it started to look slightly Beatles-esque. Maybe that's what he's going for

Umm, I think that those were all the noteworthy bits. The perm sketch was
just stupid and went on way too long. Shakira sang that song I hate, and I
went to get a snack when Bubba Sparks was on. The cold opening was kinda
tired and not that funny and the monologue was pretty typical of what they do
when sports figures host. I'm tired and need to sleep so this is about it.
Sorry this sucks so much. I would promise a better review next time the way
I've been doing since September but I figure you won't believe me and/or I'll
have to break my promise yet again since I can't budget my time this year and
am always exhausted. I recommend that you look at my reviews for last season
to get a better idea of what standard I am failing to live up to this season.
Next week we've got Hugh Jackman and Mick Jagger. I'll tell you what I
think of them later, now I'm going to go to bed. Man I'm sleepy. Until next
week

THAT'S IT!!! THANK YOU, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!! GOOD NIGHT!!! I'M TIRED!!!

George Harrison, 1943-2001
We'll miss you, man.
