OVERVIEW - I dont really care too much about Julia Stiles. I saw 10 Things I Hate About You, it was alright. This new Aerosmith song is on the radio way too much. Plus they were the halftime show at the Super Bowl. They seem to be in demand for some reason. I dont think tonights show will be all that great, but sometimes its the shows like this that end up being the best ones.
COLD OPENING - I have never really liked this Martha Stewart
bit, and I dont think it should be an opener. But I dont make
the decisons. This one was not as bad as some others have been.
Also being St Patricks Day and the 500th Live episode, I would
have thought there would have been a bigger name host.
GRADE C+
MONOLOUGE - I thought this was above average. I cant believe
that Julia Stiles is only 19. It seems that Tracy Morgan is in
the monolouges now and thats it. It was pretty funny when he
danced.
GRADE B
COMMERCIAL / HOMOCIL - This commercial is a rerun from a few
weeks ago. It was one of the better commercials this year. Will
and Chris Parnell were hilarious in this. They have rerun alot
of commercials this year.
GRADE N/A
WAKE UP WAKEFIELD - I never expected this as an opener. I
am pretty sure they were trying to make Maya's voice annoying,
and they did a good job. For once I will actually compliment
Rachael; as Sheldon she was fairly decent. Horatio wasnt that
bad either. I just dont think an opening sketch should star Maya
and Rachael. This is where Will, Chris Kattan and Darrell should
be in a sketch. Good line when Rachael said there was a problem
with pushing people into lockers when they need to get to their
bus for acclerated math. I thought the whole thing with Maya
and Jimmy was pretty funny. Julia didnt add anything here. Not
a bad sketch.
GRADE B
POST OFFICE - This was a take off from the airport sketch in
the Mena Suvari show. I thought this was funnier than that one.
I thought that Maya was good, and so was Chris Kattan. This
sketch ended on a down note, with Julia yelling at her and then
Maya being nice to her because of it. The whole thing with Arizona
and Arkansas was good. Jerry Minor was a nice addition to this.
GRADE B
MUSICAL GUEST / AEROSMITH - When this came on, I dont think
it was 12:00 yet. I have said this 100 times, but I think that
putting on music before Update disrupts the show. As I said before,
I dont know what the big deal about this song is and why Aerosmith
is so popular all of a sudden.
GRADE C
WEEKEND UPDATE - The camera work was awful. You would think
they would have that ready and organized for the show, but maybe
not. It seemed like Jimmy was too distratced by this. I hope
George W. Bush can get even with Tina Fey someday. She is pretty
tough on him. Darrell did not look much like Schwarrzengger.
He did sound alot like him though. His little speech sort of
died towards the end; I think he was on a little too long. The
joke about the suspense novelist dying was funny, I thought that
was one of the better jokes.....while the one about the berets
and Tina Fey saying they need a war was the worst joke tonight.
Her little commentary after the Pamela Anderson joke was weak
as well. David Copperfield was a surprise. He is the third big
cameo this year on Update, joining Gwenyth Paltrow and Tom Hanks.
All in all, another subpar update.
GRADE C+
SUEL FORRESTER - It has been a real long time sice Suel has
made an appearance. I think the last time was on the Ray Romano
show almost exactly two years ago. Strangely, this also marked
Will's first apperance of the show; a little late I feel. Anyways,
this was funny, but not as much so as other Suel Forrester sketches
have been. I think that Chris Parnell and Julia did a good job
acting here and added to it. Not bad overall. I think it may
have been a little long and it was easier to understand this time
as compared to the past. Usually, he doesnt clarify what he says
in understandable English.
GRADE C+
OFFICE MAIDS - This was terrible. Rachael was terrible and
Julia wasnt much better here. At first I just thought this was
going to be about Will and him being a bad boss, but that wasnt
what it was about at all. Maybe it should have been, because
this got real annoying real fast.
GRADE D
SHORT FILM BY ADAM MCKAY - All of his films this year have
been garbage. This one was bad, but the best of the three. The
other two were not funny at all. This one was funnier just because
the acting of Will. The best part clearly was at the very begginning
when Will was watching Saved By The Bell. That was funny. The
whole idea of the Doberman wasnt very humorous. These short films
need to stop, but I bet there will be one more this year.
GRADE D+
SHOWTIME AT THE APOLLO - This was much better when they did
it when Jamie Foxx hosted. The thing with Julia and her parents,
Chris and Anna was weak. I think the show died here if it hadnt
already. It is funny though when they show those fake clips of
the audiance. One plus here was Jerry Minor. He was solid in
an otherwise weak skit.
GRADE C-
WILLY SLUGGS EYE POPPERS - I think this could be a breakout
show for Jerry Minor. He was very good tonight. Will's testimonial
here was funny and the best part of this sketch. Why was Maya
Rudloph in so many sketches? She shouldnt be in more than Will
and Chris Kattan. Speaking of Chris, his testimonial was good
as well....he was a "Supreme Court Lawyer." Decent
sketch for late in the show.
GRADE B-
MUSICAL GUEST / AEROSMITH - I didnt bother to pay attention.
GRADE N/A
GERMAN CARTOON - This was weird and I am not really sure if
I liked it or not. It was good acting by both the cast and the
kids, I have to think about this one. I am sick of typing for
now too.
GRADE C
VAN MORRISON - I am not a big Van Morrison fan so I dont know
if Jimmy's impression was good or bad. It seemed alright though.
GRADE N/A
This show was not that great, right on par for the 2000-2001 season. Julia Stiles didnt really add too much to the show, but there have been alot worse hosts this year. Nothing really stood out as drop dead funny tonight, but there wasnt anything that was really terrible either. I dont expect too much from SNL these days. Alec Baldwin should be ok on April 7th. I wonder if this review will ever be posted?
SKETCH OF THE NIGHT - Wake up Wakefield
WORST SKETCH OF THE NIGHT - Short Film by Adam McKay
ACTOR OF THE NIGHT - Jerry Minor in a landslide
OVERALL GRADE - C+. That seems to be a common grade this year
