Rob Lowe / Eminem
October 7, 2000

[PRESHOW THOUGHTS] Well, I know Quinn is out, Fallon and Fey are in...but I know very little about Fey. I'm VERY apprehensive to see what happens to the show without Cheri Oteri. I hope Dratch and Rudolph fill the void. Will some one step up to Meadows leaving? I don't think it will be Tracy Morgan. Today's show will be interesting, to say the least.

[OPENING] Presidential Debates: Hilarious! I taped it and watched it over and over again! Those men have a gift...but who was playing the moderator? The lockbox references didn't get old, and "strategery" is my new favorite word. GRADE: A.

[MONOLOGUE] Rob Lowe. Whatever. No one expected him to have a great monologue, and he didn't. It introduced the show fine, and some of the Q and A was kind of funny. But I'm not really complaining. GRADE: B.

[COMMERCIAL] Corn Chip Nail Tips: Eh...not great. I don't really get it; but I'm a guy. I laughed because it was weird; not because it was funny. GRADE: B-

[SKETCH] Monday Night Football: It was great for me, but thats probably because I watch MNF anyway. Fallon's Dennis Miller was GREAT. Dude is so funny. I also liked that some of their info was straight-up WRONG. GRADE: A-

[CAMEO] Ralph Nader: Weird. But funny. Obviously just a ploy to get the man in the show. Oh well, I laughed. GRADE: B

[SKETCH] Court TV: Lowe's best performance. Very funny. I hope this kind of stuff continues on the show; its actually quite daring. GRADE: B.

[MUSICAL GUEST] Eminem and Dido: Eh. I don't really like Eminem. But Dido is great...so sure. GRADE: C+.

[WEEKEND UPDATE] with Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fay: YES! They did it. The chemistry was there the whole time. Keep it up! GRADE: A.

[SKETCH] Blind Date: I may be the only one, but I liked it! I think this type of sketch should be done more often. Its more daring, and its entirely reliant on the actors, and not cutting jokes. Its quite a bit like the old SNL. Keep doing these types of things. I am NOT a Molly Shannon fan, but she did well in this sketch. Will Farrell will someday rule the world. GRADE: A-.

[SKETCH] Dateline: Clever, funny, but not fabulous. I laughed a lot, and it was a very good impression. GRADE: B.

[MUSICAL GUEST] Eminem: Eh. GRADE: C.

[COMMERCIAL] SNL Dream Team 2000: Not the best ending to a great show...I would've liked to see a knockout sketch. Not horrible, but not that great, either. GRADE: C+.

[OVERALL]: They did it! Awesome show...better than most of last years, I'd say. I didn't suffer from very much Oteri denial at all, which is good. I'd like to see the writers continue to harness the skills of these actors and throw them into real good, solid, comic elements so we can appreciate each for their strengths. I think Ana can be put to great use this year; and she really wasn't tonight. Overall, a great show...lets see what happens next week! GRADE: A-.
