Calista Flockhart / Ricky Martin
November 11, 2000

Hello all my fellow SNL fans. Hope everyone got to see what I thought was
the best show of the season so far. Calista Flockhart was awesome and
seemed to blend with the rest of the cast effortlessly. I think her
appearance showed how a host can make or break a show. She really seemed to
bring the best out of the cast.

AND FOR THE REVIEW... Calista Flockhart/Ricky Martin 11/11/00

COLD OPENING: THE CO-PRESIDENCY
Feat: C. Parnell, D.Hammond & W. Ferrell
I was really looking forward to SNL's take on the Presidential
deadlock. I thought the joke about Bush and Gore sharing the Presidency was
predictable but the skit was pulled off quite well. Will and Darrell were
very funny in the live opening. And the tape was a riot. Its a shame one
of the two impressions has to go soon. Although I like Darrell's Gore a lot
better. Grade: B+

OPENING MONOLOGUE: CALISTA WITH ALLY McBEAL
Feat: C. Flockhart, R. Dratch.
Calista seemed very relaxed and her opening joke was delivered
flawlessly. Once again, I could of predicted that Rachel would come out
with her Calista impersonation. However, the pair performed the bit so
perfectly that it turned out to be enteraining and funny. One shock was
Calista joking about Ally needing to "eat a burger." I figured she wouldn't
agree to "skinny" jokes. Grade: B+

AD PARODY: CRACKLIN' OAT FLAKES W. ECSTASY
Feat: W. Ferrell, A. Gasteyer & C. Parnell
This was too hysterical! I loved Will's Dr. Seuss hat and how he
attacks Parnell and Ana at the end and tries to kiss them both. One of the
funnier parodies this year. Grade: A

THE KULPS AT GORE/LIEBERMAN RALLY
Feat: W. Ferrell, A. Gasteyer & C. Flockhart
Calista's opening as the exhausted/horny Gore supporter was very well
performed. Its rare that you see a host as comfortable as her in the show's
live format. And the Kulp's medley of songs was fast, furious and very
good. Ana & Will seemed posessed! The "Who let the dogs out?" part was a
riot. Grade: A

NICK BURNS
Feat: J. Fallon, C. Flockhart, C. Parnell & C. Kattan
Nice to have Nick in a different setting. That bit from last year was
getting repetitive. Once again, Calista's acting was top notch. I almost
forgot that was actually her as the geeky computer tech. This sketch was
also well written with a sweet ending. Calista is one heck of a character
actress. Surprising considering her talents are so under-used on "Ally."
Jimmy and Calista were great as the tech dweebs in love. Grade: A

AL GORE EXPLAINS FLORIDA BALLET
Feat: D. Hammond
I liked this because I got to hear Darrell's Al Gore again. However,
the writing wasn't as good on this one and the sketch wore on a little too
long. Grade: B-

RICKY MARTIN SONG ONE (unreviewed).

WEEKEND UPDATE W. TINA FEY & JIMMY FALLON
Update's new team continues to be the highlight of this season. The
jokes on this year's show are so much better than last year, I think.
Grade: A
SPECIAL GUESTS:
BILL CLINTON W. JANET RENO (D. Hammond, W. Ferrell)
Too funny! Will's Janet Reno kills me everytime. And Darrell's
Clinton is always good. Grade: A
QUEEN ELIZABETH FALLS (C. Kattan)
Nice to see Chris on the show. I wish he was on more often. This bit
was too short but amusing. Grade: B
CHARLIE'S ANGELS (C. Flockhart, R. Dratch & M. Rudolph)
Once again, a very funny bit. Maya looked so much like Lucy Lui it was
scary! The flirting between the angels and Jimmy Fallon was nicely done
too. Calista did a great Cameron Diaz. Grade: A-

CROCODILE HUNTER
Feat: C. Flockhart & C. Kattan
This is a great bit that was used last year during the Juliana
Marguiles episode. This time, Steve's wife gets viciously attacked by wild
reptiles. Chris's Australian accent is dead on. However, the writing on
this one could of been a bit better. Grade: B

RICKY MARTIN SONG 2
Feat: C. Kattan
This song was only notable for Chris Kattan's hysterical entrance as Ricky
Martin. Too clever! And kudos to Ricky for taking a joke about himself.
Grade: A Song: Unreviewed.

RETRO-BAR
Feat: C. Flockhart, M. Shannon, W. Ferrell, J. Minor & J. Fallon
This was surprisingly one of the better written sketches of the night.
A lot of the jokes were so quick they were hard to get the first time
around. Everyone was great in this bit though. Will was funny at the end.
Grade: A-

CBS SPORTS W. DAN RATHER
Feat: D. Hammond
Very funny parody of Rather's calling things early on election night.
Some of the jokes were great too. Grade: B+

OVERALL GRADE: A-
A great show with a great host and the writing was superb. Can't wait
for next week. Tom Green should be something different!
