This just in: Tina Fey will deliver
"Weekend Update" for at least two more years.
Fey, head writer of NBC's "Saturday
Night Live" and co-anchor with Jimmy Fallon of the show's
mock newscast, has clinched a two-year deal valued at nearly
$4 million that includes her writing and performing duties on
"SNL" as well as the development of a primetime comedy
for the network.
Fey, "SNL's" head writer
since the 1999-2000 season, is the first woman to hold the post.
She won an Emmy last year as part of the show's writing team.
Several skits she has written, including this season's innuendo-filled
"Colonel Angus" sketch, have become part of the show's
lore. Fey also was recently named one of People magazine's 50
Most Beautiful People.
The primetime series is in an
early stage of development, and it is unclear whether Fey will
star in the project. While NBC declined comment, insiders expect
Fallon to rejoin Fey at the "Update" anchor desk when
new "SNL" episodes begin in the fall.
