'SNL' Tidbits for September 20, 1998

Quinn and Macdonald Not Feuding

"Saturday Night Live" cast member Colin Quinn -- who's one-man show, "An Irish Wake," ended its three-week run yesterday -- seems to be enjoying every minute of his "SNL" gig as anchor of "Weekend Update." Last year, in a highly publicized "SNL" shuffle, NBC president Don Ohlmeyer replaced Norm Macdonald with Quinn at the "Update" news desk.

"Me and Norm are good friends," Quinn tells the New York Daily News. "I didn't want to take his job, but I told him up front that if he was leaving, I wanted to be the one who got it. He was very supportive, a real gentleman about it. We're still good friends."

Shaq Joins 'SNL' Line-Up

Shaquille O'Neal has joined the roster of celebrities appearing throughout the 24th season of "Saturday Night Live." The Lakers basketball player will be a special guest on the October 3 episode. Kelsey Grammar (Emmy winning star of "Frasier") will host, and Sheryl Crow will serve as the evening's musical guest.

Stern Slides Further

Howard Stern continues to slide in the overnight ratings, coming in on Sept. 19 with a 2.7 rating / 7 share, a full rating point behind FOX's "Mad TV" (3.8/8) and half the draw of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" (6.0/15), which featured the best of Phil Hartman. "Saturday Night Live" has its season premiere next week.

Stern's Show has had a bumpy ride, but this is the lowest point in its first five weeks. The number of markets has varied, and it has less coverage across the country than its main competitors, but even so, its performance has been less than stellar.

The numbers:

Gasteyer to Guest on Season Premiere of 'Shoot Me'

"SNL" cast member Ana Gasteyer will guest star on this Tuesday's season premiere of "Just Shoot Me." In the show, she'll sleep with ex-"SNLer" David Spade's Dennis Finch, in his bosses house. Molly Shannon is also slated for a cameo on the show this season, and Cheri Oteri appeared on the show last season.

Oteri Says 'WOW'

"SNL" cast member Cheri Oteri is the spokesperson for Lay's WOW Potato Chips. Look for her in commercials promoting the new chips with "all the taste, but no fat."
