"[I'm in] slight shock," Spade tells People Magazine, of the fallout from the TV spot. "Those commercials are cool. . . . And that they would include 'Tommy Boy' in that company, I thought was very flattering."
"Oh, my God if [Farley] was here, I guarantee he'd be stoked that this little movie is included," said Spade. "The movie is important to me, and I would hate to offend [anyone] because that's one of my favorite things I've ever done. So I would apologize to someone who took it that way."
"When Direct TV came to me and the Farley family with this idea about 'Tommy Boy,' we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was," Spade said in a statement to ABCNews.com. "It is a clever homage to my friend and a movie that we loved doing."
The late actor's brother, Kevin, a friend of Spade's, voiced his family's support for the ad in his own statement. "We as a family believe the DirecTV commercial is a celebration of Chris," he told the Daily News through a rep.
"It shows him doing what he loved to do most, making people laugh!! He would have loved the spot. We are grateful to DirecTV and David Spade for doing it, and for honoring Chris and the classic movie 'Tommy Boy' in this way."
Kevin Farley also added that part of the proceeds from the ad go to the Chris Farley Foundation, which uses humor to educate teens and young people about addiction and substance abuse.
